Once there was a businessman who couldn’t see himself out of the debt that he was. Creditors were closing in on him. Suppliers were demanding payments. One day he went to a park and sat there on a bench, wondering if there could be anything at all that could save his company from bankruptcy. He had given his best and tried everything he could but nothing had happened. As the man sat there ridden with his anxieties and worries, an old man came and sat right next to him. The old man said ‘’I can tell that you are very disturbed. There is something troubling you. What’s the matter?’’ The businessman thought since there was nothing anyway that would save him, he started and told the old man about his situation. If anything, he would feel a bit lighter by expressing himself. After hearing the story, the old man said ‘’I think I can help you.’’ He asked the man’s name, wrote a cheque, and gave it into the man’s hand saying, ‘’Take this money and meet me here exactly one year from today and you can pay me back at that time.’’ Then he turned around and vanished. The businessman looked at the check. The man looked the check and he was astonished by what he saw. It was a check for half million dollars, signed by one of the richest men in the world. J.D. Rockefeller.
The man got really happy as he knew that with this money, his anxieties and worries will end. The businessman instead of using the money, he decided to put the check in his safe. Now he could still give another shot to save his business without using all this money. Even if nothing came out of his efforts, he had the check as a fallback option to save his business from bankruptcy. Now, with new optimism and zeal, the businessman negotiated better deals and extended his terms of payment. He also manages to close some big deals and withing just few months he was completely out of the debt without using none of the money from the check he had gotten.
Exactly one year later, he returned to the park with the check on his hand. As they agreed upon time, the old man appeared. Just as the businessman was about to hand back the check and tell his story to the old man, a nurse showed up and grab the old man. ‘’I am really sorry’’ she said. ‘’I hope that he didn’t cause you any troubles. He always escaping from the retiring community and telling people that he is J.D. Rockefeller.’’ And then she walked away holding the old man tight by his arm. The man was astonished, stood there, stunned. All year long he had been wheeling and dealing, buying and selling, convinced that he had half a million dollars behind him. He realized that it wasn’t the money that had turned his life around, it was his new found self confidence that had given him the power to achieve anything that he went after.
Isn’t it a fact that when we go through big challenges financially or emotionally can make us feel overwhelmed. We feel drained having exhausted all our resources, financial and mental.
What we need to fight those challenges is not so much the resources, but the confidence, the strength to fight it out. And that’s exactly what we badly lack at that time. And then we have someone or something behind us to support pull through all the bad situations and bounce back to success with gratitude, experience, realisation and wisdom.
